LIC Healthy Kids After-School Program

“It is our mission to act as a catalyst for change for community members to achieve social and economic self-sufficiency.  There is no better place to start this process than by improving the health of our children,”  said Riis Settlement Executive Director William T. Newlin recently, commenting on a project partnership that began with Healthy LIC in February 2010.

The cornerstone of the partnership is a new health education component built into the existing Riis after-school programmin at the Queensbridge Site, developed by TFH’s Senior Health Educator, Michele Morgan, and Riis Settlement Program Coordinator Veronica Franklin.  The curriculum, modeled on the Healthy Kids, Healthy New York After-School Initiative introduced by New York State in October 2008, is designed to establish healthy lifestyle choices for students Kindergarten through 8th grade.  This program is made possible by generous funding from the Bronx Health Reach Legacy Project and the MetLife Foundation.
